I had the opportunity to photograph David a few months ago for a feature Metro was doing on his company EVNTLIVE (see my profile on ISL). We started out doing a few simple setups with David and another of his co-founders showing off the product in their conference room. The shots were effective but I really wanted a stronger portrait of David that could work as a lead image or even a cover (hey, you never know).
This portrait is lit with three lights. The key light is an Elinchrom Ranger Quadra into a beauty dish high above the camera. Another Quadra is far camera right firing into a strip modifier. This light is doing double duty by acting both as a rim light as well as lighting the camera he’s holding. Finally a ring light positioned just above the camera is there to provide a bit of frontal fill.
Metro ran a color version of the shot above as the lead for the story but I always liked the mood of it better in black and white.
